  1. Finish these sentences from the text:

    1. ”Apirana dedicated himself to the improvement of Maori, both socially, culturally, and economically.

  1. ”Apirana was a proud Maori, and fought to set up businesses and school for maori throughout New Zealand, and it is this kind of work that created his legacy”

  1. ”...he used these connections to educate himself in the ways of the European politics and law”

  1. Why do you think it was important for Apirana to educate himself like a European? Māori were being encouraged to live, and behave like Europeans, and while Apirana did act, and behave in a European way, he knew that if somebody did not fight to keep Māori culture alive

  1. What do you think motivated him to fight so hard to keep Maori Culture alive? While he studied at European schools, it was his deep connection to his Māoritanga (Māori culture) that motivated his work after University. Māori culture was starting to be pushed aside.
