  1. How old was Sheppard when she moved to New Zealand?

Her father died in 1862 and in 1869 Sheppard came to New Zealand with her mother, two brothers and a sister. They arrived at Lyttelton on February 8 1869 on the Matoaka.

  1. What was something that Sheppard believed women should actively be able to do?

An early feminist, she believed that women should participate fully in all aspects of society, including politics.

  1. What does NCW stand for?

(NCW) stands for National Council of Women.

  1. What were 3 actions that Sheppard took as leader of the NCW to get women their right to vote? 

    1.  Kate Sheppard co-ordinated and encouraged the work of local unions. 

    2.  She organised petitions to Parliament asking for women to have the right to vote and persuaded Sir John Hall.

    3.  A leading member of Parliament, to support them.

Kate Sheppard is recognised as the leader of the fight to win the right for New Zealand women to vote.

  1. Why do you think this was so important?

I think it is important because it’s not fair that women don’t get to vote just because we’re girls. I think that all people should have the right to vote and that all women should no matter what their opinion matters.

Why do you think it was important for Apirana to educate himself like a European?  Māori were being encouraged to live, and behave like Europeans, and while Apirana did act, and behave in a European way, he knew that if somebody did not fight to keep Māori culture alive


What do you think motivated him to fight so hard to keep Maori Culture alive?
While he studied at European schools, it was his deep connection to his Māoritanga (Māori culture) that motivated his work after University. Māori culture was starting to be pushed aside.
