Zaria-SLJ-Day 5 (Against The Odds)

Week 1: Physical Limits
Day 5: Against The Odds
Welcome to the last day of the week, we have learnt about many great sport people this week, and I have enjoyed doing these task. However today we have 3 amazing activities to do, so let's start!

Activity 1

For this task we had to memorise 3 things that are mainly to as and why we are grateful for them or it. I have lots of things in my this world and in my life, but the three things are mostly my Family, food, school.

Sofie Pascoe is a Para-Swimmer who was born here in New Zealand. When Sofia was 2 years old her leg was run over by a lawn mower. She did survive but this incident left her having to get her leg amputated.

But despite Sofie's misfortune she still pursued her dreams. She became a competitive and talented swimmer. She won many medals, and also got the Halberg-Award for Disabled Sportsperson, 3 times. Sofie Pascoe was a real role-model and a great example she really inspired people to pursue there dreams no matter the obstacles they must face.

Activity 2: Swimming to Safety
For this task we had to learn about a brave girl called Yusra Mardini. She had to over come a challenge in which we had to listen to and rewrite in our own words. We then had to share it on our blogs

Once upon a time there was a girl. She loved to swim and became her hobby and her dreams. But before that, she went through difficult times. This is the story of Yusra Madini.

Yusra was like any other girl who grew up in Damascus, Syria, and went to school there. Despite what happened later in her life, Yusra did not swim. While the other children were swimming, she was standing by the pool. Arranged in the mysterious water in the background. Yusra could barely see the ground and even if she could, a slight nervousness would overwhelm her. The water bothered her, but the fear was still under control.

One day, when Yusra looked at the water, he decided to do something unexpected. Yusra jumped into the pool and dived into the water. For a second, she gasped. Before she realized, Yusra was swimming. Yusra has become a very talented and competitive swimmer. And exceeded all expectations.

A problem arose a few years later because part of the population was not satisfied with the government. The government has shot dead brave people and protests that have expressed their opinions. It was an important problem that Yusra initially did not care about. But at the age of 13, the conflict became so severe that it became a civil war. Large groups of protesters gathered around Syria and fought against the government to conquer cities.

Yusra and her family were initially safe. As they lived in a quiet area of Damascus, the capital of Syria. But soon the fight is over. Bad news was heard every day and it got worse. One day, Yusra and her father went to the pools to exercise. They saw that the pool was in ruins before the bombing and shooting. Yusra could no longer train, her dreams were ruined. After a while, it couldn't get worse, it got worse. The house of the Yusra was also destroyed. They had nothing left and could not go anywhere. Innocent people have been killed and lives have been destroyed!

Yusra Mardini portrait.pngYusra's family we were forced to go into hiding and each day they lived in fear. No knowing if they'll be able to live to see the next day. At age 14 Yusra, saw only 1 way out. They had to leave Syria, in search for a better life. Yusra's parents said no to the idea of leaving, as it would be too difficult. Especially with a Yusra's little sister who was no older than a toddler. After a while Yusra's mother made a plan to send Yusra and her older sister, with her 2 cousins on a risky trip to Europe. They had no other choice, it was unclear if the rest of the family would make it, but for now it was the best path.

Yusra would travel to where many other Syrian refugees had fled, Berlin Germany. There they could start a better life, and Yusra might be able to start swimming again. In Germany, she'd be able to train better and along-side many other great swimmers. Yusra left Syria, with some clothes a cell phone, and a small amount of money. The money was going to be used to pay the smugglers, as most countries don't allow refugees. Yusra left one her dangerous journey to Europe.

They first traveled to Lebanon then Istanbul Turkey. As they went on their journey they dreaded the fact that they may get caught by the police. The police would surely send them back to Syria, where the war was still happening. From Istanbul, they went south to a coast in Turkey, which was close to a Greek Island called Lesbos. At the coast, the smugglers awaited, for the right time to get them on board a dingy, which would then take them to the island. It took 2 tries before they finally pushed the dingy out to sea at nightfall.

They landscape shrank as they quickly speed away into the darkness of the Mediterranean sea. Less than 20 minutes after they had left the coast. The dingy's engine started to clang louder and they started to slow down, until finally they came to a halt. The dingy started to sink, It was only supposed to carry 6 people but the smugglers had fit 20 people on instead. Everyone panicked and started throwing any belongings overboard desperate to keep afloat. None of it helped, as they continued to sink in the middle of the Mediterranean sea.

Out of the 20 people on the dingy only 4 knew how to swim. They tried many other ways to save the dingy, but nothing worked. The four swimmers including Yusra and her older sister, jumped into the water and started pulling the dingy. Yusra was at the front using one arm to hold the rope and the other to help her swim. They started moving slowly but surely. They continued swimming the dinghy was heavy and Yusra was tired numb, and her eyes burned from the salt water. She continued to swim, she knew that if she didn't do her and the rest of the refugees would die without a doubt. Yusra was determined!

After 3 and a half hour Yusra and the other swimmers sighted land and gained a burst of determination. There was no way they were giving up now, especially with the finish line in sight. Yusra and the refuges finally made it too land, the two other swimmers pulled the dinghy onto land. Yusra and the refuges hid in the cornfield where they waited for nightfall to make their move.

As they started they were sadly caught by the police. The police took them to a refugee camp not far from where they had arrived. As they were being transported Yusra and her sister started laughing. The police demanded to know what they found so funny. Yusra stated in her head" we were going to die in the sea, and now the police think we should be afraid of them".

Yusra and her sister escaped the refuge camp, the first chance they got. Yes they had made it to the island, but they hadn't reached their destination. They continued on their journey and crossed 9 more countries. Yusra and her sister arrived in Berlin Germany after a month. Things weren't the best, and Yusra had to work hard.

She slept on the floor at the refuge camp, but she did join a swimming club. When she first tried out she was out of shape and didn't do her best. But the Coach saw some good potential in her. Yusra's technique was good and with some training Yusra could be amazing. So she started. She is training she'd wake up at 6:00 am so she could train before school, and then go back after her classes. Yusra was determined to reach her goal.

In the 2016 Olympics Yusra was asked to join the first refugee Olympics team. She competed in the 100 meter butterfly race and she won. Yusra is now training for the 2020 Olympics an at this rate, there is nothing stopping this girl from achieving her goals.

This is the story of Yusra Mudini, The End!

Activity 3: Own Choice
For this task we had to choose someone we we think has changed the world. An amazing explorer who went far and beyond, to look for something better, greater!

Image result for jessica watsonJessica Watson is the youngest person to journey alone, around the world at the age of 16. Jessica spent about 210 days alone at sea. Once she completed this voyage, she became famous the prime minister also gave her a lot of attention. The Prime Minister met her in person give her the title of Australian hero. But Jessica humbly declared that she was no hero, but instead and ordinary person that dreamed. And then made that dream a reality!

The Documentary Jessica filmed at sea was narrated by Sir Richard Branson. The producers of Oscar-nominated movie Lion, are working on a film version of Jessica’s story.

Zaria-SLJ-#Day 4 (Individual Pursuits)

Week 1: Physical Limits
Day 4: Individual Pursuits

Welcome to the fourth day of the summer learning journey. I can't wait to continue learning about more about amazing sports people and how they got to where they are today. Let's start!

Activity 1: Making a Racket

For this task we had share 3 things we learnt about Serena and Venus Williams. We were given 2 videos to watch so the facts came from the video. We also had to name one things we still wanted to learn.

There are many great tennis players, like Billie Jean King, Venus Williams and Serena Williams. They have worked hard to ensure that women are payed the same amount of money as male tennis players.

Billie Jean King, competed against many skilled male tennis players. She beat Bobby Riggs in 1973, and prove that women we just as good and probably better, tennis player as men.

1. There was a tennis competition that promoted 8 of the best tennis players in the world. Serena played in this competition and came 1st while Venus Williams came 5th.

2. Venus and Serena, are 2 good tennis player that enjoy playing the game but find it unfair that Male and Female tennis players get different pay. They both see tennis as careers and the fact that female and male tennis players have to get different pay.

https://time.com/5382684/serena-williams-vs-venus-williams/

3. Serena has made around 80 million dollars with her career in tennis.

-  Why is there a difference between female and male tennis players, when they both play the same game by the same rules.

Activity 2: What's In A Name?

For this task we had to imagine we were allowed to change our name. We had to share on our blog what we would change it too and why we would change it too that name.

Muhammad Ali is up there among many other of the greatest boxers in the world. He started his career and training at age 12. After that he went on to become the World Champion. Muhammad Ali is originally, an African American. He was born with the name Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. But he changed his name to Muhammad Ali when he became a Muslim.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali#/media/File:StangoAli.jpg

If I could change my name I would change it too Roselina. Roselina is a very beautiful name even if the meaning is 'gentle horse' in Latin, there is also a Latin flower called Rosa. This name is quite common unlike my real name, and also quite old.

I also want the name Roselina as it is beautiful and my name is Zaria, which is a nice name, but I often get called Zara, as it is so similar. If my name is Roselina, I will probably get called things like Rose Rosa or Lina, and I'm happier with that.

Activity 3: Worth Her Weight In Gold
For the last task we had to create a travel for any country of our choice. The poster had to include tips and things to do in the country we have chosen. We then had to share our poster on our blog.

Dame Valerie Adams is an well known shot put champion from New Zealand. She won many medals at the Olympics in 2016 and has Won the World Championships 4 times.

She is also a proud Tongan New Zealander. New Zealand has a mixture in people, including Tongans.  Tonga is located between Fiji, Samoa and Niue it is a group of 169 islands in the Pacific Ocean.

That concludes the second to last day of the first week. I had fun and can't wait to finished this week. We have learnt heaps already and I can't wait to continue!

Zaria-SLJ-#Day 3 (Team Player)

Week 1: Physical Limits
Day 3: Team Player
Welcome to the third day of the summer learning journey. I have enjoyed doing it so far so let's continue with the 3rd day. Today it is mainly about sports and being a team player. Let's start!

Activity 1: Rugby Superstar

For this task we had to, imagine we were a super hero for a day. We then had to think of 3 super power we would want and why we'd want it. I enjoyed this task and hope you enjoy reading it!

Jonah Lomu is a Rugby Superstar and is like a  real life superhero. He was one of the youngest All blacks player, he started at age 19. He's strong tall and fast. Jonah grew up in a Tongan family in the South-Auckland Mangere. He played touch and league in school but changed to union so he could make a name for himself.

Another real life superhero is Riche McCaw a famous. He was the captain of the All Blacks 2004-2015. He a real role model and great at leading the All Blacks. He was, hard working and served the team well. He was a real team player!

If I could have 3 super powers it would be flight, invisibility and the power to move things with my mind. I'd want these super powers because they would be useful when saving people and everyday life.

I would want flight as it will allow me to get to place really quickly and also reach high up places, in case you didn't know I am very short. It would also help me catch super villains and traffic won't be a problem either. So as far as I'm concerned, this would be a great super power.

Secondly I would want invisibility. I would want invisibility because then I'll be able to catch thieves in the act, and put an end to super villain plots. I would also want invisibility as it would help me do things without getting noticed. I could take extra cookies from the cookie jar and no one would know.

The last super power I would want is the ability to move things with my mind. Because then I would be able to do things without moving. I am quite small and short thus meaning my physical abilities are limited. This super would allow me to do things.

Activity 2: Defying The Odds
For this task we had to think of a basket-ball player, we then had to think of 3 questions we would as them, if we were granted permission to interview them. I enjoyed this task and the basket-ball player I would want interview Valentina Vignali.

Image result for valentina vignali altezzaValentina Vignali is a  Model and basketball player. She is known for her commercial, advertisement and modeling for several different swimsuit brands. Before Valentina was famous she, did modeling at a young age after being involved in athletics. Valentina then appeared on the MTV style The Hottest Swimsuit 2017 which made her pretty famous. She was born and raised in Italy she was and people have said that she is dating Stefan Laudoni.

Zaria-SLJ-Day 2 (Up In The Air)

Week 1:Physical Limits
Day 2: Up In The Air
It's day 2 of the summer learning journey. Today we are focusing mainly on people that did amazing things and followed their dreams. Most of those dreams were to do with flying and air planes. My dream is to become a flight attendant. So this interested me a lot. Enjoy!

Activity 1: Flying Solo
For this task we had to compare 2 very talented people that followed there dream of flying. Jean Batten and Amelia Earhart. I made a compare and contrast with the help of my sister!

Activity 2: One Small Step For Man
For this task we had to write a poem about how Neil Armstrong felt about landing on the moon. This was quite an accomplishment, and also where the saying "One Small Step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

Neil Armstrong was one of the most amazing people. He was 1 of 3 people to land on the moon. Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon and as he did her recited "One Small Step For Man, One Giant Leap For Mankind". Many brave people had attempted but failed to land on the moon, usually this resulted in death. So Neil must have been very brave to take on this task!

Activity 3: Miracle On The Hudson

For this task we had to recount a time, we or someone we know was brave, or did something brave. I didn't know a time I was completely brave
In 2009 Mr Chesley Sullenberger or Sully, received fame when he landed his aeroplane in the middle of the Hudson river. After both engines on sully's plane broke down, he was forced to make an emergency landing on the middle of the Hudson River in New York. Luckily all 155 people on board the plane survived. This was a brave accomplishment, and sully must've been very scared.

My story takes place, a few years. Me and my family were on a holiday in Fiji. My sisters were busy playing with the dogs and I was climbing a tree. I didn't have much to do, and I was bored. Anyways, as I climbed I came across a large beehive. I didn't think to much of it at the time. I continued to climb, but as I did. A large swarm of bees gathered around me. I didn't know what to do, I was scared. I screamed for help. My brave cousin quickly climbed up the tree and helped me get down. I didn't get to many stings, but I was taught a valuable lesson. Don't climb trees without parental super vision. I also learned to stay away from beehives.

That concludes the second day of the summer learning journey. I am having so much fun and can't wait to continue doing the summer learning journey. Hope you enjoyed, stay tuned for more!

Zaria-SLJ-Day 1(Exploring The World)

Week 1:Physical Limits
Day 1: Exploring The World
year I am doing the summer learning journey. I have never done this before, so I am looking forward to doing so new learning. My sister however has done this many times before. Let's Start!

Activity 1: Setting Sail
For this task we had to list all the Items we would take on a 3 week voyage. This is because this week we learnt about some Polynesian explorers. 1 amazing explorer is  Nainoa Thompson. He used his ancient knowledge to navigate around the world with a group of people.

Nainoa said that the planning of this voyage took place way back in the 70's when our ancestors invisioned and built this an amazing canoe. The Hokule’a and Hikianalia been on many voyages one being the Naoni a three week voyage, at which you will spend at sea. This voyage to 16 years of consideration before it was decided that they will actually carry out this task.

http://www.hokulea.com/update-point-england-welcome/

pasta, nuts, fruits, vegetables, milk, rice, eggs, canned food, cookies and lollies. I would take pasta because you can make many foods with this item and it is long lasting and not hard to keep edible. I would take nuts because they are healthy and will help to keep energised, nuts don't go bad often. I would take fruits because they are good to eat as snacks and you don't have to prepare them before eating. I would take vegetables, because they are healthy and you can make many dishes with them.

I would take milk because it is healthy and it is good to drink with dry nuts. If you take powdered or warm milk it  can last up to 8 years. I would take rice because it's delicious and easy to store. lastly I would take eggs as they are good to eat and you can use them to make many dishes. Canned foods are also good because they last long and you don't have to cook most of them.  I would take cookies and lollies so I can have a treat from time to time!

Task 2: Discovering Aotearoa
For this task we had to look back into our cultural backgrounds. We had to look at where out ancestors were born. I was born in New Zealand with my sisters. But my parents and my parent's parents were all born in Fiji. My family dates back generations in Fiji!

Activity 3: Scaling New Heights
For this task we had to choose 1 charity out of the 4 options we were given. We the had to learn as much as could about that charity. Afterwards we were to tell you what that charity does!

The Charity I chose was SPCA. The SPCA finds animals in need, and they provide them with food, care, and medical treatments. They have seen many bad cases, but they managed to save many animals. When the animals are in good shape they are put up for adoption and given a good home.

The money that the SPCA make from giving animal to the adopter are then used to save another animal. This charity has made lots of money and save many animals.
Click this link to adopt today!

That finished the first day of the summer learning journey. I had fun and will continue doing the summer learning journey stay tuned for more!
